Subtle Patterns

shirt and sweater: Target, scarf: Giant Eagle, pants NY&Co., shoes: Payless

I don't think you can really tell from these pictures, but this shirt actually has stripes, so I've got stripes, flowers, and polka dots all going on in this outfit! When I do my pattern mixing (which hasn't been very often), I like to keep it a little subdued. I'm sure I'll get braver, but for right now, this works just fine for me. :) Have you tried out pattern mixing? I'd love to hear some suggestions on how you've pulled it off!

Pants Love

blazer: thrifted, tee: Five Below, pants: NY&Co., shoes: Target

I love these pants so much that I've been determined to find different ways to wear them! Well, my love for them plus the fact that I've switched to a new job with a much more professional dress code that my closet hasn't caught up to yet. :) This is a much bolder look than I've tried when it comes to combining colors, but something about the tone of each color in this outfit makes me feel like it works!

Sunday Social

Today has been a no make-up, sweatpants and tee kind of day.  I at least managed to put on jeans and a hoodie to do my grocery shopping earlier today, but since I doubt any of you care to see photo documentation of that outfit, I decided to join in on The Sunday Social over at Ashley's blog instead! :) Check it out to learn a little bit about some other bloggers!

Sunday Social

1. What is something you have wanted to do but are afraid of?
Having children.  Truthfully there are some days that I think I never want to have children. A lot of days actually. Even though I'm 28, I don't feel anywhere near ready and I love the time I get with my husband and the time I get to myself way too much to bring a baby into the picture, but I'm hoping we someday get to the point where it's something we want. When the topic crosses my mind though, the thought terrifies me - being pregnant, giving birth, and the responsibility! I guess just being Aunt Jess for a good while longer is what I'll stick with. Tons of fun with the niece and nephew I'm lucky enough to have and much less scary! :)

2. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Good question! A month ago I started my job as an academic advisor and I couldn't be happier! I've had my eyes set on working in higher education for the past few years, so it feels good to be where I feel I belong professionally. In 5 years, I better be in the same field of work, but I'm excited to see how the experience will unfold! On the personal end of things, I plan to still be happily married, hopefully with a lot more fun adventures together! Who knows, maybe by then we'll be ready to finally decide where we stand on that whole baby thing. :)

3. What are you looking forward to before the end of 2012?
I always look forward to the holidays! We're able to see both our families and I love spending time with them. The amazing food doesn't hurt either! I'm also really excited to run my first marathon next month! I already got incredibly emotional after finishing my 20 mile run, so I've already warned my husband that I'll be a blubbering mess when I actually finish the race...haha. It's something I'm going to be incredibly proud of though and hope to accomplish more than once!

4. What are your hopes for your blog?
I've never been the most creative person, (I recently took an assessment at work that confirmed that creativity can be a challenge for me. The results were super interesting and explained a lot of personal strengths too!) so I feel like this blog helps me grow and develop those skills. It's always challenged me to develop my own personal style even more. I hope it always continues to do that while also continuing to give me the opportunity to meet other bloggers with the same interests!

5. Do you always see yourself living in your current town/city?
I do! All of our immediate family is within 2 1/2 hours of our house, and I love that. Columbus, Ohio is a great city to live in. I love the conveniences of living in a city, while still having that relaxed mid-western feel. (at least it feels that way to me!) You can always find something to do!

6. What is your morning routine?
It depends on how ambitious I'm feeling!  I always check the news, facebook, instagram, and google reader from my phone to see what's going on before I crawl out of bed. I love to run in the morning, but have a hard time getting up early enough if my training plan calls for anything more than 4 miles for the day, which unfortunately is most days when training for a marathon! :) I shower, then before running out the door I grab something to eat and my coffee to have on the way to work.

Boycott Lifted

ell the heels boycott was lifted today. :) I found these boyfriend style khakis on sale at Old Navy for only $15 and couldn't resist. Cropped pants seem to be my new obsession. To me, the pants and sweater gave off a bit of a tomboyish vibe, so I paired heels and a statement necklace with the outfit to satisfy my girly side!

High Heel Boycott

shirt: Walmart, pants: New York & Co., belt: Kohl's, shoes: Target

My weekend kind of whooped me. My 20 mile run was on Saturday and afterwards I joined my husband, sister-in-law, her boyfriend, and a friend down on campus to tailgate my way through the second half of the Ohio State game. I'm amazed and encouraged at how good I felt (I'm finally feeling confident about finishing the marathon next month!), but my achy legs this morning boycotted the idea of anything but flats. Thank goodness I had this new pair I scored for $10 from the Target clearance section on Friday evening! :)

I've Got Skills

shirt: present from my cousin from Two Birds (San Francisco), pants: NY & Co., shoes: Kohl's

showing off the zipper on the back...

This is a perfect example of time management. I headed to the mall to find my sister-in-law a birthday present and decided to just use their parking garage for a photo shoot before heading home. That left plenty of time for shopping and picture taking before heading home for dinner. :) Good news is that I found my sister-in-law some birthday stuff. Bad news is that I've officially decided that H&M is bad for my bank account!

Loving Layers

cardigan and sweater: Old Navy, pants: NY & Co., shoes and watch: Target

For the second week, I've made a point of picking out at least 4 of my 5 work outfits for the week on Sunday night, then moving those items to a designated spot in my closet so they're easy to go to each morning. Substitutions definitely occur, and this morning it was an addition! I've been what I'm sure has been annoyingly vocal about my dislike for extremely hot weather, so I was so excited to have weather cool enough to make throwing a cardigan over this outfit bearable today. I feel like it's so much easier to complete a look with layers - I tried really hard to use jewelry and different belts at the suggestion of some wonderful ladies to keep some personality in my outfits this summer, but I'm looking forward to being reunited with my comfort pieces of scarves, boots, and cardigans this fall! :)

Still Smiling!

shirt: Ambiance (my favorite store in San Francisco!), pants: New York & Co., shoes: Target

Going back to work after a three day weekend is always tough, but it's so much easier when you're going to a new job you're really loving! :) I really did spend Saturday through this morning rotating between sweatpants, yoga pants, and shorts. It was pretty wonderful, I have to admit! I spent some time on Sunday going through my closet because I all of a sudden felt like I owned too many things that I never wear. Now I have to get those items I decided to part with to a donation center as soon as possible before I change my mind!
